MY FIRST HIP HOP LESSON

Pre - UBD

I loved teaching it! The students loved learning it! Was it well thought out and planned? Unfortunately not. I spent about 30 minutes the night before watching some "how to teach" videos and created a small lesson plan. Here it is:

Objective: To get students to move to rhythm using whole body and build confidence in dance (hip hop dance)

Motivational set: wear sweat suit and pump music

Management: line students up with enough personal space to move forward, backward, side to side

Warm up: whip and nae nae

Basic choreography:

Teach each skill using demonstration at half speed first.

(E.g. One and two and three and four)

Steps are:

Side to side

Kick and out

Kick side kick kick side

Forward dig together

Step step turn together

Side side dab hit together push

Running man

Pump and glide

Tip: Encourage all dancers by rotating front of the line consistently

Adaptations:

- if students are skilled encourage to try at double time.

- if students are unskilled encourage to do quarter or half time.

Games:

Happy feet game (don't touch the glass)

- use cone at center

- form circle

- students engage in dance around cone

- if cone falls / moves (5 burpees)

Dance battle with judges (Crumping)

- start by partnering students and teaching them that people used to dance battle to settle problems. Changed the dynamic of gang wars.

- reassure them that it is just for fun. Don't get "offended" if you are pointed at. In fact, when if comes to dance battling, pointing is good.

Cool down choices:

Whip and nae nae

Or

Creative dance to song

- song of choice: mission impossible

Free style to the theme!

Demonstrate "spy" related moves
